Santa Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It's known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. To the south, in the city of Avalon, palm trees and cabanas line Descanso Beach. Avalon’s circular, art deco Catalina Casino is a cultural center with a movie theater, ballroom and museum.

Catalina offers priceless, scenic views, but those are practically the only things on this island paradise that don't cost a wad of cash. Many people have ditched the whole idea of a sojourn on this lovely island, which costs nearly $70 to reach via ferry.
Is a day trip to Catalina Island worth it?
Catalina is definitely worth a day trip. You can rent a golf cart or ride the open buses, or both. There's plenty to see there, including the Botanical Gardens, and plenty of nice waterside restaurants. The boat ride over is also very pleasant.
